Review: Carcassonne

Based on the southern French city of Carccassonne, famous for it's unique Roman and Medieval fortifications, this award-winning game of simple, clever tile-laying brings new challenges with every turn!

This is another game that we would probably never have chosen to try ourselves but is actually one of our favourites out of all the games we have reviewed. The game is suitable for 2-5 players, age 7 +. 

Me and Sam invited Gracie to join us playing this game as she is 7. We weren't sure whether it would be too difficult for her as the instructions sounded quite complicated but after we had all taken a turn each, it clicked and we all understood what we needed to do. 

Each person starts with 7 'Meeple' in a different colour. When it is your turn, you take a tile and place it touching one of the tiles already placed. Each tile will have either a road, city, church etc. You can place your Meeple on these cards and once a city or road is completed you gain points and your Meeple is returned to be used again. It is a game of both luck and strategy. You hope for tiles that will help you increase your points but you may get something else and have to think of where that tile is best used.

There is also a board that comes with the game that helps you track each players score throughout the game. There are two expansions that came with the game that we need to find some time to play around with, a selection of river tiles and some more figures called 'Abbots' that are used to add to the game and make it more of a challenge.

I really enjoyed this game, as did Sam and Gracie. I, of course am the current family champion of Carcassonne. It is fun to play, it gets your brain engaged and you never quite know who is going to win!

We really enjoyed this months game and can't wait to see what we get next!

  4. Oh this sounds like a really fun game, so different to anything I've seen before! I do love discovering new family games, I may have to give this one a go!

  5. I love how that even though Carcassonne is not a game you would have chosen originally it in fact ended up being the game that you enjoyed the most. It sounds like a fun game that all the family can enjoy!

  6. Ooo I love strategy board games! I might have to get hold of this. Being the single twenty-something I am, I might invite my friends round to play and add wine into the mix, but sounds great!

  7. Our kids love playing with board games and I am sure they would love to add Carcassonne to their collection

  8. I've never heard of this game before but it sounds like a great family game. I'm sure my nephew would love to play this x
