Open Farm Sunday #OFS15

Monday, May 25, 2015

Last week we visited Whetstone Pastures farm in Leicestershire to find out all about the farm and their plans for Open Farm Sunday. Open Farm Sunday is on 7th June 2015 and hundreds of farms across the country open up for public visits with lots of fun activities planned. Most of the events are free whereas some ask for a small contribution.

Whetstone Pastures Farm is a family run farm with a passion for educating people on the importance of farming and growing your own food. In the main area of the site they have a special outside classroom they have created for school visits, an outdoor play area for small children and a range of activities they have planned out to do with the children. They have a huge outdoor pick your own fruit farm with Strawberries, gooseberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants and raspberries all available to pick across the Summer months. They also have what is called a keyhole garden which shows people how you can grow a lot in a little space.

They host events all through the year from school visits to birthday parties and weddings, We got to see the area where they host events under a marquee complete with stage and wood fired pizza oven. They also have a very homely tea room which sells home made cakes and jams made especially by Sandra herself using produce grown on the farm (I have tried some of this myself and can say it is delicious).

Down on the other part of the site is the grain store and some calves which have recently been born. I took the kids along with me and playing with the grain and seeing the new calves were the highlights of their visit.

For Open Farm Sunday there are lots of activities on offer at Whetstone Pastures including pizza making, sheep shearing and spinners, visits to the beehives, farm trailer rides, nature walks, local foods and music in the courtyard to accompany cream teas and cakes. They will be charging £3 entrance per car with proceeds going to a charity that helps farmers in need.

We are going to try and pop along for Open Farm Sunday ourselves for a fun family day out. Don't worry if you don't live close by to Whetstone Pastures Farm though as they are just one of hundreds of farms involved.
