Elsie's Dairy Free Weaning Journey
Thursday, January 22, 2015
I found myself very limited in what I could feed Zach for fear of setting off an allergic reaction and stuck to making my own vegetable purée's. This time I can experiment a lot more. I've been given some dairy free recipe books and the go ahead to start weaning straight away as she is showing all the signs of being ready.
We haven't got to go back to see the dietician until she is 1 now as I am confident with what I am doing and so I have a phone number to contact if I do have any questions or worries, but we don't have to go back until she is old enough to try to introduce dairy. This is the part I am not confident with. I never had any help with Zach and at 2 years old he still reacts to any slight milk content that he is given. I don't know where to start or what foods are easiest to reintroduce. Having a dairy free child can be a bit of a battlefield and there is so much conflicted advice when it comes to weaning.
We have started her mainly on baby rice and purée fruit but she isn't overly fussed by food yet and only has a few mouths full. Totally different to her brother and sister. I will keep you all updated on how she is getting on and hopefully, when I start making her proper food, I will write up some easy to make dairy free weaning recipes for anyone interested.
If anyone has any great ideas for dairy free foods I would love to hear?

Quite a few cow & gate and organic foods are dairy free. We used these with our little miss. Also for trying with zach try malted milk biscuits first, that's what the hospital advised with us, and it's been a great success. Good luck carly.

Good luck. I am sure you will be fine, but it is nice to have support. My youngest was late to weaning, but once he got started he loved food
ReplyDeleteDylan was diary free until he was four due to excema. It worked for him when we reintroduced and he hasn't had excema since. Obviously intolerance is different though. I used to even melt diary free choc to make hime easter eggs! Then I found some I could buy!
ReplyDeleteFeeding babies is difficult anyway and if they are allergic to milk - it gets harder. Good luck and I hope you find some great recipes as she grows older.
ReplyDeleteIt must be a lot of work watching what they eat so carefully! When I introduced solids to little Mr I often inspired myself with the meals available in stores and made them at home. I'm sure they have quite a few dairy-free foods you can try and replicate, hope it all goes well x
ReplyDeleteMy daughter was dairy intolerant when she was little and I remember the nutritionist we were referred to saying to give her lots of broccoli for the iron.
ReplyDeleteyour baby is so cute! I so want another one! o nice to have help.
ReplyDeleteaw how sweet, my sister has just started to ween her twins, so I hope you have as good success as she is x
ReplyDeleteThere definitely seems to be more 'free from' foods available now so I hope it doesn't prove too much of a problem for you x
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photo! Sounds like you have everything pretty much under control. I would be flapping if mine had to have some kind of tailored diet.
ReplyDeleteGood luck. That sounds quite difficult so it's great the support is there. I think recipes will be really useful for others in the same boat.
ReplyDeleteOld luck on your weaning journey, always a fun but messy time!
ReplyDeleteOooo that is tough, I have a son with many intolerances so I know how hard it is. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteMy brain has gone into block mode. Dairy free choices are so limited - i hope you manage to put together a good bundle of recipes that your little lady will enjoy x
ReplyDeleteThat's so sweet, I remember it so well as it is such a huge transition, I hope it goes really well for you :)
ReplyDeleteI think the recipes are a great idea and hope she starts having more of an interest in the food x
ReplyDeleteI remember my little ones loving fruit purée - it's was great storing them in ice cube trays in advance x
ReplyDeleteMy little one was fine with dairy but it must be really tricky to have a dairy allergy. It's great you're getting support x
ReplyDeleteGood luck! I wish everything will go very well for you! Blessings!
ReplyDeleteAaron's always drunk Cow & Gate Infasoy (although for the first 13 months it was in addition to breast milk, as I had low milk suply) now that is his only drink apart from cordials and water. I try to keep him dairy free as it eliminated his colic and reflux and eczema. xx
